Norman Leaf MD FACS

Essentials in selecting your Surgeon

Dr. Leaf is considered a leader in his field, performing all types of cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries and is most renowned for Face, Neck, Eye and Breast procedures. He is double board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is an elected Member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Your consultation with Dr. Leaf is an opportunity for you to ask as many questions as you may have, to discuss expectations and possible risks, and for him to get to know you, your medical history, and listen to your concerns. He is a very good listener and an astute observer of your unspoken concerns.

Dr. Leaf will make some suggestions for your care based on your general health, your wishes and goals, your physical structure, and the condition of your skin. You will find him uniquely honest and open if he feels that he cannot make enough of an improvement to justify the discomfort, the scars, the costs, the risks, he will tell you so. If, as is more likely, he feels he can help enough, he will recommend a procedure or procedures for you.

After consulting with Dr. Leaf you will meet with Caroline Alexander, his Practice Director, to discuss timing, review costs and payment options and receive valuable printed information on your procedure to help you in making your final decision.

Forehead Lift

A brow lift minimizes the creases that develop across the forehead, or those that occur high on the bridge of the nose. It improves what are commonly referred to as frown lines, and repositions a low or sagging brow.

Full / Lower / “Mini”

Also known as rhytidectomy, a facelift is a surgical procedure to improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck. Although there have been many variations on the theme in an effort to make shorter scars, and Dr. Leaf has done them all and helped to originate another, he usually feels that the most natural, longest lasting facelifts are done with the longer incision. Done properly, this incision is actually less noticeable than many short-scar procedures, which may require some pleating of the skin around the earlobe. The healing time should be no longer than any other procedure, and most patients are presentable in two weeks. The incision often begins within the hairline at the temples, goes into the ear where it is completely hidden, then continues around the ear and ends up in the scalp behind the ear. Fat may be removed or redistributed from the neck, and the underlying muscle layer is tautly re-positioned, allowing the skin to drape smoothly without tension.

Sagging jowls, loose neck skin and fat accumulation under the chin may be corrected with a neck lift. Sometimes the work can be done through a small incision beneath the chin, but most often the incision begins at the ear lobe and wraps around behind the ear, ending in the lower scalp. A procedure called the Trampoline neck lift, which was developed by Dr. Greg Mueller and Dr. Leaf, can improve the neck and jawline without any incisions at all. Selecting the right procedure to fit the individual need is a matter of judgment and experience.

Upper / Lower

Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery improves the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, and gives a rejuvenated appearance to the surrounding area of your eyes, making you look more rested and alert. Droopy conditions of the upper eyelid can be corrected through an incision within the natural crease of the upper eyelid allowing re-positioning of fat deposits, tightening of muscles and tissue, and/or removal of excess skin. Conditions of the lower eyelid may be corrected with an incision just below the lower lash line. Through this incision, excess skin in the lower eyelids is removed. A transconjunctival incision, one hidden inside the lower eyelid, is an alternate technique to correct lower eyelid conditions, and redistribute or remove excess fat.

Reconstruction / Refinement

Also known as rhinoplasty, nose surgery improves the appearance and proportion of your nose, enhancing facial harmony and self confidence. Surgery of the nose may also correct impaired breathing caused by structural abnormalities in the nose. The "nose job" of years ago is a distant memory. Modern nasal surgery often involves adding tissue to the nose to produce balance and symmetry, rather than just removing tissue.

Augmentation / Implant

Also known as augmentation mammaplasty, breast augmentation involves inserting implants to fulfill your desire for fuller breasts or to restore breast volume lost after weight reduction or pregnancy. Dr. Leaf prefers to use the newest cohesive silicone gel implants, but also utilizes saline implants if desired by the patient.

Replacement / Revision

Breast implant revision (removal or replacement) can have many benefits, providing physical relief from painful, hard capsules as well as improving the appearance of implants which may have wrinkled or folded over time. It's a sad but true fact that breast augmentation surgery is often performed very poorly, and these results will only deteriorate over time. Dr. Leaf often uses advanced techniques involving Strattice or Alloderm ACM to better support a new implant and provide padding beneath very thin skin. Fat grafting is another treatment that can help enhance a breast in which there is too much implant and not enough skin or breast tissue.

Also known as mastopexy, a breast lift raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. This may be done in conjunction with a breast augmentation. There are several types of mastopexy, and Dr. Leaf has been a leader in the field of the vertical technique.

Breast reconstruction is achieved through several plastic surgery techniques that attempt to restore a breast to normal or near normal shape, appearance, and size following mastectomy for cancer.

Also known as reduction mammaplasty, breast reduction removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body, and to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts. The procedure is quite similar to the mastopexy, except a substantial amount of breast tissue is removed along with skin. As much as one to three pounds may be removed from each breast. Imagine the feeling of relief having that much less weight for your neck and shoulders to support.

Also known as gynecomastia, breast reduction for men is the surgical correction of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men, it's not that uncommon.

Laser assisted fat removal

A revolutionary new laser liposuction technology. SLIM stands for selective laser induced melting where the laser selectively dissolves fat, unlike standard liposuction which can often destroy tissue. SLIM Lipo offers a gentler more thorough fat removal, less bleeding, less bruising, quicker recovery and less risk of revisional surgery. A secondary benefit is that the skin may be stimulated to tighten as well. View the complete SLIM Lipo Brochure

Also known as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin, and in most cases restores weakened or separated muscles. A smoother, tauter, firmer abdominal contour is created. There are variations of technique here as well, depending on how much skin and fat is to be removed, or whether the muscles need tightening at all.

Also known as otoplasty, is the correction of protruding ears using surgical techniques to create or increase the antihelical fold (just inside the rim of the ear), and to reduce enlarged conchal cartilage (the largest and deepest concavity of the external ear). Prominent ears often prevent patients from wearing their hair short or pulling it back. This procedure is a boon for them, with virtually invisible scar.
